Black History Day at Tanglewood Middle

Black History Day at Tanglewood Middle

Tanglewood Middle School had an Assembly about Black History, February 21. Ms. Jones, the mother of our chores teacher, sang us the rhyme “Jump Back” by Paul Dunbar to help us remember why we had Black History. The chorus sang a few spirituals. Some football players from Malden High sang and danced. Our step team also showed us a few moves. Mr. Sandi Sullivan from AT&T talked about his life and told us that you need an education to have work. They had a fashion show of how they dressed back in those days. The students at Tanglewood were shown inspiration from the past and the triumphs of African Americans today.

The Most Important Lesson Brooke Chambers Learned

During this year, Mrs. Brooks taught Brooke in her classroom that Brooke should feel good about herself by discussing with Brooke this topic, because Brooke wanted to feel good about herself and everyone Else to do the same. Chambers believes everyone should learn this lesson and that it is very important. Chambers says this lesson was not funny, but very serious. It was just an accident Brooke learned this lesson, not on purpose. As Mrs. Brooke taught this lesson, Chambers says she began to feel better about herself and like she mattered immediately. Chambers did not expect to go to math class and receive a higher self-esteem. Chambers says without this lesson, she would feel worse about her life. This lesson made Chambers sort of happy. The lesson Mrs. Brooks taught had an impact on not only Chambers, but everyone else in the room through Mrs. Brooks passionate words.

An Interview With Officer Nicholson

The journalism class interviewed Officer Nicholson about her job in Miss Puffer's classroom on February 6th, 2008, because the reporters were interested in learning about her experiences as a police officer. They found out she is a "control freak", which is how she put it. Nicholson says she knows how to communicate with people really well, and she knows how to control herself. Nicholson has been a police officer since 1995 when she was hired. Nicholson likes to solve things. She has never shot a gun at a person before. Nicholson admitted that she does get scared, but the fear does not stop her from doing her job. She loves her job. She has arrested many people. Nicholson cares about people which is part of the reason why she does her job. She cares about people who don't have the ability to speak for themselves. Nicholson says she does not get payed a lot, but she does not mind, because she wants to help people. She would do her job for free. Nicholson says that her being a quiet person and an observing person has benefited her with her capability of solving problems. She regrets not working hard in school and not getting a collage degree. Nicholson says the worst crime scene investigation she had to be a part of was about a five-month old child with lots of fractures, which is very bad for the health of a child. Later, Nicholson found out the child was being abused. When she did this, she felt liked she had been the voice of the child who could not speak. Nicholson says she watches America's Most Wanted and ran into one of the people who has been searched for. The person was a child molester. She saw him in Greenville County in her first year of work. She witnessed the man giving two older teenage boys drugs. The man took the boys to a hotel for inappropriate behaviors.

Nicholson said she always wanted to be a cop as a child. She has been to court a lot for a variety of reasons. She has had to chase people in cars and on foot. She said that when you chase someone in car, you have to think about the safety of people around you. Nicholson said on foot chases, "You win some. You lose some." Nicholson says she has had to tazor someone. Animal cruelty cases are not common in Nicholson's work, but she has been in a few cases of animal neglect. Nicholson has been in gang fighting situations she had to help stop. Nicholson has been undercover and was undercover as a prostitute. Nicholson said she would not arrest a family member if they committed a crime. She would let another officer carry out that arrest. Nicholson says she has never been attacked by another woman, but has been by men.

Nicholson is a very serious person who has had many encounters in life a lot of people have not as a police officer from convicting people on America's Most Wanted to arresting people for speeding.

Jazz Pooh is Mad at Denisha Johnson

Jazz Pooh and Denisha Johnson broke up their friendship last week at Jazz Pooh's house, and Denisha believes it is because she was annoying Jazz Pooh, and her facial expressions made Jazz Pooh mad. Johnson is relieved that her best friend is mad. Johnson said, "It's her problem." Johnson said that her ex-best friend is nice sometimes. Johnson was expecting to have a good time at her best friend's house, but she did not expect the friendship to break. Jazz Pooh has ceased to talk to Johnson. Ms. Hance at Tanglewood Middle!

Recently I interviewed another intelligent worker at Tanglewood Middle. The librarian who is also the teacher of the year, Ms. Hance gives me and my Journalism classmates an overview of her life as a librarian at Tanglewood Middle. She is a graduate from the University of Finley. She also took classes at Jacksonville and at Furman University. Ms. Hance has her degree in Elementary Education and Library Science. Hance hopes in the future she can go to school and get her masters degree. She only became a librarian because a women at her school while in college gave her a job in a library. She has been a librarian for 16 years (science 1986) and she was a Media Specialist in Georgia in 1993. She has been here for 4 years. She told me that the biggest lesson she has learned was when her mother passed away and she didn't speak up and give her opion and she says she learned to be more open. She says she doesn't have a lot of family. The closest thing she has to a big family is TANGLEWOOD MIDDLE!! She says she has 601 children: the students at Tanglewood and her pet dog Shelby. She says she is real close to a lot of students here and she is very grateful. She say the biggest complaint about her job is she doesn't have enough time with the students who enter the library. "I would love to be able to help students more and work with them more."

Marvin Learns Not to Judge People Based on How They Look

Marvin Espino learned his life lesson when he was five when his mom taught him that it isn't a good thing to judge somebody by the way they look. Marvin's mom said that the only way to judge somebody is if you get to know them and know how they act. Marvin said that there was this boy who looked different than other kids and he said things about him but when he told his mom she got dissapointed. When his mom gave him that talk he said he hasn't judged anybody on how they look and only on how their personality is.

Officer Nicholson Tells all about Tanglewood!

Officer Nicholson was recently interviewed by my fellow and new Journalism classmates. She told us the changes and challenges she has had to do in order to be the successful officer that she is. I was recently introduced to our school resource officer. She has been an officer since October 1995. She is married with two children, a ten year daughter and a 7 year old son. She has been married for 11 years. She meet her husband when he was a K9 handler. She says the greatest thing about her marriage is learning from the mistakes that she and her spouce have made. She then told us why she became an officer. She says she became an officer because of her family memebers. She also told that before she became an officer she was a hair stylist for 5 years. She says she was told that because she was a girl she couldn't be a police officer. Before she started working here she worked at a state prison in 1993 for 2 1/2 years. After that she became the 9th female deputy out of 310!! She says she would love to be a K9 hnadler. She then goes on and tell about her job her at Tanglewood Middle. She say she has made only 12 charges and 2 in jail. (Just for Tanglewood) She told me that she as arrested more girls than boys. ("CAT FIGHTS," says Nicholson) She has mostly arrested people for fighting, stealing, and drugs at Tanglewood. Although she has been acttaked she says "I love my job, I really do. When I am not working I am lost without it. It has become part of me."

Ms.Hance's Incredible Life

Ms. Hance has been a librarian for 16 years because she loves books and technology. She started off as an elementary teacher. Now she has been a librarian at Tanglewood Middle School for 4 years. The only thing she does not really like about her job is that she does not spend as much time with the students. Her favorite food is cheese burgers and her favorite word is cool, her favorite animal is a dog, and her favorite color is blue. Her greatest lesson is that if you feel there is something you need to say, say it.

Why do you always have to do that?

"Why do you always have to say that?"
"Because it is the truth."
"No it's not."
"Yes, it is"
"God, you always got to throw him up in my face."
"I don't throw him in your face ever."
"Yes, you do"
"NO, I don't"

"How do you get that you don't throw him in my face when you do."
"When do I throw him in your face?"
"Its like every time i get in trouble."
"Well I'm sorry if I do that"
"How can you be sorry? When you tell me that it is always too late to say sorry after you have already done it."
"I guess that there is a time you can say I'm sorry."
"When? After you have done something wrong?"
"Yes, I guess"
"So it is only when you have done something wrong?"
"NO, everybody can say I'm sorry."
"Whatever!"
"Don't walk away from me"
"Why not, you walk away from me when I'm talking to you?"
"Yes, but I'm your mother."
"So, you always walk away form your mother."
"That is different."
"How is it different? You are her daughter and she is you mother."
"I'm allowed to. I'm grown."
"So that don't make any difference."

Ms. Hance opens up to TMS Journalism Class

An excited librarian, Ms.Hance, comes into the journalism class and reveals life secrets and lessons with the staff. She really opened up as she came in and the first thing she said was,"C'mon! Ask me anything." Her not so secret enthusiasm bled through.

Ms. Hance was amazed as we came straight out to the point as the first question the class asked was the essential question of "What was your greatest life lesson?" The answer came out pretty fast as she told us the story of how years ago her mother died when the Ms. Hance was 36 due to her heart not being able to be sewn back up after surgery because of its size. Even as an adult it hit her hard. She learned that you should always speak up but you need to watch what you say. Due to the death of her mom, Ms. Hance said words to her niece that ended a great relationship and to this day she can't even remember what she said. She also recalls this event as her biggest mistake in life.

The next subject we got off on was how she ended up as a librarian. She said she had a love for Hardy Boy books. Once on a visit to the library she saw one she wanted to check out. She laid it on the counter to check out and the librarian told her she couldn't have the book because she had read enough of the Hardy Boys. She Went to college eventually, even after a guidance counsellor told her she wouldn't make it in college. Eventually she did thanks to the job offer the school librarian gave her. She started then and has been a librarian for 16 years, 4 of those at Tanglewood.

She then started on the subject of relationships. After losing her mom she lost her grandmother then father. She hasn't been married for two reasons: She's very independent and she just hasn't found the right person. She has tight relationships with her friends though. I personally think she takes after her mother as far as the size of her heart goes. The class asked if she had any children. She said,"Yes. I have 600 and they all leave at 3:00 which is the best way to have kids. I also have one at home with four legs and a cold wet nose." You guessed it; the other child is her dog.

Amazing. Ms. Hance who spends half the time joking around or dressed up like a doctor named Dr.AR, actually has a serious side. I was kind of surprised to learn so much from her.

I Love You More Than Applesauce
by: Jack Prelutsky

I love you more than applesauce,
Than peaches and a plum,
Than chocolate hearts,
And cherry tarts, And berry bubble-gum.
I love you more than lemonade,
And seven-layer cake,
Than lollipops,
And candy drops,
And thick vanilla shake.
I love you more than marzipan,
Than marmalade on toast;
For I love pies Of any size,
But I love you the most.

William Davis Wrecks

When you think that your day couldn't get any worse. Trust me it can. One Monday, I was having a bad day. We went to school and I kept getting in trouble. Then after school we went and picked up my mom from work. As we were leaving the hospital, right when we were getting ready to turn left, an old women about the age of 70-80 came out of nowhere and hit us doing about 40 mph. She hit the left side of our car. I was sitting in the passenger and my mom was sitting behind me. When the car hit us, I went flying. The side where my mom was the right side of the car caved over my mom's foot. When we looked up we had men and women gathering all around the car. They called 911 for us to get us EMS. When we got out, we went right back to the hospital. We were in the ER for 3 hours. They said nothing was broken. Thank God. Now we are doing much better.

Victoria Marsh's brother Benjamen broke his arm while swinging at South Side Park. This accident occurred two years ago when he was swinging too high. He went to the park with his mother and sister. After he got on the swing, he was going really high. His mom told him to slow down, but he did not listen."About five minutes later he fell,"said Victoria. Right after he fell, they rushed him to the hospital. Benjamen learned the importance of listening to your parents.

Missing My School

To be a new student is a horrible feeling. I really want to go back to my old school. I wanted to leave but now all I want is to go back. I know a few people here but I think the way Tanglewood operates and their expectations is what I am not getting a long with. For an example in the morning we are to sit in the hall way outside of our class and wait for the bell. At my old school the 8th grade students were allowed to sit with their friends in gym and conversate. We also were able to either go to dance class or play basketball until the bell. When we changed classed we didn't change with the 6th and 7th grade. When we changeed classes we had time to talk and use the restrooms. It seems that at Tanglewood we barly have time to get from one class to the other. We had relate arts at the end of the day and it was with our own grade period and not with different grades. SOOOOO to be honest I really really dislike being at Tanglewood and nothing would make me happier than to be back at the best school ever BEREA MIDDLE SCHOOL!!!!!!!

Ms.Hance's life

by:Kyshawn Ware

Ms.puffer's 1st period A day class interviewed Ms. Hance on the 8th of February. She has worked at Tanglewood for 4 years.Ms. Hance was a librarian for 16 years. Ms. Hance feels like a kid when with Tanglewood Middle School. Tanglewood is the first middle school Ms. Hance worked at. Besides being a library lady, she would want to work with the CIA. One of her most embarrassing days was when her shorts were riped and a student told her. Ms.Hance never thought about being a library lady untill a college professor gave her a chance to be a library lady. A time when she embarrassed somebody was when she was hitting somebody with a flying monkey. One time when she made someone mad when she broke her and her nease heart and lot there friendship.

Jamedra Brown Has Surgery

Jamedra Brown got surgery on her throat on Mothers day at St. Francis Hospital in 2006. She got it because she had an abscess in the back of her throat. She was 11 years old. She was not mad but it was not fun. She thought she was gonna die. She spent 4 days in the hospital and could only eat Popsicles. The nurses gave her laughing gas to get her to go to sleep. For presents, she got teddy bears, balloons, and posters. The abscess blocked her breathing space. She said "I can't breathe!"when the abscess was being pulled.

The life of a teenage girl

Hey, my name is Vanessa and I go to school at Liberty High School and make just about straight A’s. When my mom and dad spilt up I didn’t know what to do anymore. I was the reason they spilt up. My sister and brother tell me over and over hat they hate me because of what I did to the family. I blame myself. My mom tells me that the fault was my dad and hers but it wasn’t.
“No mom, stop blaming yourself. It’s not dad’s nor your fault that you guys spilt up. It’s mine.” I say. “Why do you always got to say things like that?” she asks.
“What kind of things do I say.”
“Who told you that it was your fault and why do you blame yourself for the stupid mistake that we made?”
And I can’t, won’t lie to my mom. It was my sister and brother. She tells me, “don’t listen to them” but I do not know what to say, so she comes up and says, “I don’t always have to be the tuff girl in the family.” Then I ask, “What else I do then. No response so yeah I do have to be the tuff girl in the family doesn’t I?” It took her a long time to answer me but then out of nowhere she came up and said “No you don’t I need to learn how to be the tuff one where when you or your brother or sister get in trouble then I could help get you out of it.”
I do not know how to tell you this mom. I have been talking to dad here lately. He told me to tell you “He misses you and will always miss you." Then I told him I would try to bring it up to you but I do not know how to then he told me start talking to you about school so then I told him that you would know that something was up because I never talk to you about school.
So, here goes nothing I keep on telling my gut ‘You would understand that I’m just a little girl and that you would not hate me forever you would gain my trust back sooner or latter no matter what happens because I’m your daughter.” Being someone’s daughter is like telling someone that you would never give up on them or what they say because you are what you make yourself out to be not who you try to be. Well that is what she always said.
So one day she picks me up from school and then she asked “how was school” I said “ok why how was your day at work.” Well “I got a phone call” I had to ask “from who” she answered, “your dad” so “what did he want?” She said that “He wanted to see me and asked do you want to see him or not?” I answered with a sight “sure I guess that I will go see him only if he don’t ask me any question about you and how our life’s are because I’m not going to answer him about that because that is not his business it is our business.”
“So, when do I go this weekend I’m busy sorry can’t go.” She asked me “what I was doing this weekend that was more important then going over to my dads” I said. “Going out with my friends.”
She said, “How do you get that they are more important then my dad.” I said because “He left us and plus he don’t care about us any ways we are going out to eat then to the movies so can I have about twenty dollars or just some money to go out this weekend with them?” She told me, “NO”I said “Why?” She told me “I had to go to my dads instead of going out with my friends.” “Mama I don’t want to go with some one that doesn’t care about me or you nor my brother or sister even though they don’t care about me.” So, “Mama what are we really doing this weekend?” Answer “Well you are going to your dads.” “why he only wants to see me and not my sister or brother?”
She had to answer me with the four words I hate that she always has to say “Because I Said So.”
Now, it is the next day at school and my friends are asking me “can I go out with them this weekend.”
“I hate telling them no.” When they ask me why I told them because my mom is making me go over to my dads house.
“Yes the guy that walked out on the four of us.” I asked her “why she was making me go to a guys house that don’t even care about us and she said Because I Said So”
“I hate when she says that don’t you hate when your mom always says that to you?”
Well, “Girls the late bell is about to ring so we better get to our favorite class Social Studies not if I’m late for that class again I’m on my way to ISS no excuses because that would be my fifth time this week being late for that class.”
“If my mom finds out I’m in a lot of trouble with her and my dad even thought he don’t care about me any more.”
Well, “See you latter when classes Change to seconded period and all my friends standing at our lockers all five of our lockers are all in a straight line.”
Now it is the end of the day, I’m talking to my friends at my locker waiting on my mom to come pick me up at school now she just got here.
So, “Girls I have to go and talk my mom into letting me go out with you instead of going to my dads.”
Well, “I really can’t tell you girls anything else because my mom is making me go and I can’t do a single thing about it because when my mom says Because I Said So.”
“Plus my mom told me that he had a surprise for me and she knows what it is but she promised my dad that she would not tell me what it was.”
“Mama when do you keep promises with dad about anything so tell me my surprise.”
So, “I can act surprised about it and if I don’t want it I don’t have to go do I?”
Well, mama what is it?” Answer “it is a puppy your doggie had puppies”
“Okay mama I guess I will go just to get the puppy and stay one night and then will you come pick me up form dads please mama.”
She said “Okay that we could do that”
Now, “that is over can I have twenty dollars to go out with my friends I will go back to dads next weekend only if I like his new girlfriend.”
Mama didn’t know about his new girlfriend “I thought that he told her” I guess she just found out because she just asked me
“What new girlfriend are you talking about?”
He has been living with her for two mouths.
Now, “he told you that he isn’t seeing anybody or what did he tell you?” Answer “He told me that he was not seeing anybody.”
Well, “He told you a lie and he will keep on until you tell him that I told you the truth.”
You know that he is nothing much then a liar
Mama, “How did you feel when you found out that he lied to you about him cheating on you.”
She said “She don’t remember how she felt when she found that out.
“I still blame myself.” She doesn’t even know it because if I tell her then she will tell me “Not to start to blame myself for that same old mistake that every family will have to face once in there lives on matter if they aren’t the fighting type.”
“If you have a good family then you have to fight sometime instead to betting around the bush about things that are going on in your lives.” “Never tell your mom or dad that you hate them even if they do something so bad that it makes you want to kill yourself”
“It’s not even worth your life. Because I told my dad that I hated him for what he did to my mom and now he is trying to make me feel really bad. So that I will be sorry but it is not working right now. He hasn’t told me that he loves me, my mom, my brother and sister more than anyone or anything yet. When he does I’ll try to stay strong but I’m not sure how I’m going to react to it but I think that I’ll fall into his arms and cry and tell him that I love him, mom, my brother, and sister more then anyone or anything. They are my family. Families stick together and they don’t need to ever split up because they are made to stick together.” This is from a ninth grader, fourteen year old girl that goes to Liberty High School and needs to be with her family right now.
“Don’t ever think you are the blame for some stupid mistake that your mom or dad made always stick with your family and never let them go even if you need a break from them.
Now, “I’m going to stop writing this story because every story has a happy ending so go find your happy ending. I hope you find it soon I found mine in my family. So maybe you could start looking in your family to find your happy ending.”

Officer Nicholson's Incredible Interview

Tanglewoods Journalism staff interviewed Officer Nicholson and found a softer side of her! Officer Nicholson, Tanglewood Middle School's resource officer has been married for 11 years. Ms.Mullinax Goes to Washington D.C.

Ms. Gail Mullinax went to Washington D.C. in 2000 because she wanted to spend time with her family by traveling with them.

She saw a couple of pictures of George Washington. Ms. Mullinax has visited many places including all the states in the U.S.A and Europe (twice).

I wonder what Ms.Mullinax saw on all her trips? Like when she went to Washington D.C. we know she most likely saw the White House. What if she saw one of their history museums, with all the old war equipment and war technology. Did Ms.Mullinax see any pictures of famous presidents of the past? I wonder if she saw any of the war equipment still built together.
